Andrew Bates is a consultant in the Financial Services team. He specialises in the regulation of financial services, including MiFID services, asset management and investment funds, insurance regulatory matters and regulatory investigations.

Andrew advises a varied financial services client base, including: regulated fund servicers firms – mainly fund managers and sponsors (UCITS/AIFMD); asset managers and investment firms (MiFID); insurers – domestic and cross border; and service providers, payment services firms and intermediaries in other regulated sectors. He sits on the boards of several investment fund platforms, Super Mancos and has previously sat on boards of MiFID firms and life insurers.

Andrew is the author of several publications, including detailed guides on UCITS, AIFMD, QIAIFs, MiFID and on insurance regulation. He is a regular speaker on financial services topics at domestic and international conferences and industry events. He has been recognised as a leading lawyer in these practice areas by Chambers, the Legal 500, IFLR and others. Andrew is a former Council Member of the Irish Funds Industry Association (Irish Funds); a former member of the IF Private Equity Working Group; and a member of the Investment Funds division of the IBA.

Andrew’s representative transactions include advising:

  • numerous fund sponsors on investment fund formation and regulation.
  • Life insurers on establishment, outsourcing, regulatory investigations, wind down and governance matters.
  • MiFID firms, on establishment, on regulatory investigations, on inducements, transaction reporting and on also product governance matters.
  • Fund managers on setting up/converting to Super ManCo.
  • various other regulated entities on a variety of regulatory interactions.
