John is a specialist in commercial litigation, regulatory investigations, fraud and asset recovery and maritime and transport law. His clients include national and international corporations, banks and financial institutions, insurers, individuals, hauliers, freight forwarders and shipping companies. He is highly experienced in all types of High Court proceedings and regularly represents clients before the Irish Commercial Court. John acts in a variety of contractual and tortious disputes and represents clients in arbitration and mediation.

John’s specialist expertise includes: financial services and banking litigation; shareholder disputes; fraud, mis-selling claims; advising clients through the Central Bank administrative sanctions procedure; appearing before the Irish Financial Services Appeals Tribunal; enforcing foreign arbitral awards; and property and vessel damage claims.

John is a member of the International Bar Association and the Commercial Litigation Association of Ireland. He is a regular contributor to local and international publications and has spoken at international conferences in the area of commercial litigation.

John’s representative transactions include advising:

  • The Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland in proceedings arising from the collapse of Setanta Insurance.
  • A number of regulated entities through the Central Bank's Administrative Sanctions Procedure, up to and including reaching a settlement with the Bank.
  • Clients on appeals before the Irish Financial Services Appeals Tribunal.
  • Acting for Irish and international financial institutions in the reversal of fraudulent asset transfers.
  • Acting for a US financial institution Commercial Court proceedings arising from the bankruptcy of Sir Tony O’Reilly.
  • Advising financial services clients in relation to frauds perpetrated from the use of cloned websites.
  • Perrigo Company plc on its High Court application to reduce its share premium account by USD 11bn.
  • Investors in Commercial Court proceedings arising out of the Madoff fraud in the US.
  • Various parties on complaints brought before the Financial Services Ombudsman.
  • On the enforcement and recognition of a foreign arbitral award of almost USD 280m under the Arbitration Act, 2010 in the Commercial Court.
  • An Irish insurance company in a series of multi-million euro proceedings arising out of the alleged mis-selling of a bond.
  • On shareholder disputes and minority oppression shareholder actions for a number of Irish companies and individuals.
  • An international bank on losses incurred by investors following their investment in a bond.
  • National and international banks in seeking judgment in summary proceedings.
  • National and international carriers and freight forwarders in relation to cargo damage claims.
  • Insurers and ship owners on property damage claims.
