Media and Defamation

Dillon Eustace act for the publishers of newspapers, books, magazines, and periodicals, and has a recognized expertise in defending defamation actions.

The firm has been involved in successfully defending many of Ireland’s most notable defamation actions in recent years. Just as importantly, we have a reputation for working to economically diffuse threats of expensive libel actions.

One of the particular strengths of our Media and Defamation Group is its depth of experience in pre-publication matters. This advice which when coupled with the team’s responsiveness provides the client with an unequaled service. In light of the new remedies in the Defamation Act 2009, this responsiveness is particularly important to our clients.

We have represented clients in relation to contempt of court proceedings as well as dealing with complaints which have been made against them to the Press Ombudsman or appealed to the Press Council.

Our recent experience includes

  • advising a national daily newspaper in relation to pre publication issues on a daily basis.
  • advising a client in relation to opposing an injunction aimed at preventing publication of certain material.
  • advising on pre publication issues in relation to the publication of a biography.
  • advising in relation to intellectual property regarding the launch of a website.
  • advising in relation to enforcement constitutional rights as well as data-protection issues.
